YONKERS -

Residents say they were shocked to hear gunfire erupt Monday night in the area of Marshall Road and Ridge Drive in Yonkers.

Police officials said a police officer was shot in the face after responding to reports of a suspicious vehicle. She and another officer approached the suspects, one of whom drew a gun and opened fire.

One suspect was shot in the exchange, and the other was taken into police custody.

The incident drew a large police presence to the scene.

"A cop flew right by me," one witness said. "Immediately, as soon as he turned the corner, I started hearing gunshots. Another SUV went right by me."

Another witness told News 12 that he turned around and left the area when he saw officers drawing guns.

"Just hope and pray that our officers are safe," said a third witness.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition.
