Prosecutors: Port Chester contractors stiffed day laborers out of $20KPosted: Updated:
Port Chester day laborers will no doubt be paying close attention to their paychecks this week after two prominent contractors were arrested for allegedly stiffing workers out of tens of thousands of dollars.
State prosecutors indicted Donato Pagnotta and Giovanni Dilullo of J & D Painting Contractors Corporation for writing $20,000 in bad checks to six workers after they completed the job they were hired for.
Day laborer advocates staged a rally Friday in Port Chester, where the contractors are based, saying the alleged fraud hurts the community at large.
Advocates say they are trying to raise awareness of this type of wage theft, which rarely is reported for fear they may be deported.
"It's continuous and pretty widespread, especially in the immigrant communities where the employers think they can get away with it, and there's no punitive measures to stop it," says Christopher Calabrese, of Communications Workers of America.
They are hoping any other workers who were scammed will come forward and are calling on legislators to pass laws that would crack down on repeated abuse of vulnerable workers.
