The family of a White Plains woman killed on Sept. 11, 2001 is making sure to keep her memory alive as the date’s 16th anniversary nears.
Joan Balkcom’s sister Sharon worked at Marsh and McLeannan, an insurance firm in the north tower of the World Trade Center, located right where a plane crashed into the building.
For 16 years, friends and family have gathered near her home on Winding Road in White Plains, next to a bench marked with her name.
This year they sang songs, released butterflies, read poetry and shared stories about Sharon.
