Mamaroneck lowers speed limit around schools

Posted: Updated:
MAMARONECK -

School is back in session next week and that means drivers along busy Boston Post Road in front of Mamaroneck High School will have to slow down.

Assemblyman Steve Otis (D) and state Sen. George Latimer (D) announced today that the village’s new school zone speed limit is 20 mph.  A new sign will show that the limit is in effect on school days between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Officials say the new restrictions will force drivers to slow down in order protect the students and staff as they cross back-and-forth from the high school to Hommocks Middle School and other areas along Boston Post Road.

Some parents say the area has been a problem spot for the community for a number of years, with numerous accidents. "Even with cars that try to slow down and do the right thing, can't always notice children who aren't always walking rationally. Just making people aware that there are schools here and that they need to slow down is critically important," says parent Melany Gray.
