Opening day on new Tappan Zee Bridge shows sleek design, new featuresPosted: Updated:
On its first day in operation, News 12's Kirsten Rossotti took a ride along the new Tappan Zee Bridge to see what the commute was like.
The first phase of the "Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge" opened at 1:36 a.m. Saturday morning after four years and $3.9 billion in construction.
Four lanes of Rockland-bound traffic have since opened up, with some on-and-off congestion as commuters got their first chance to see the new bridge.
One of the most notable changes to the new bridge are the massive steel cables connected to 400-foot towers on the bridge, providing a sleek and modern look.
The steel cables will also light up in the nighttime hours.
