Mt. Vernon valedictorian delivers pro-immigrant messagePosted: Updated:
Kevin Cuellar had only been in the United States for nine months before he was asked to give the valedictorian speech at Grimes Elementary School in Mount Vernon last school year.
"I was scared because I didn't really speak English, but I did well in my classes because I put my heart into my work," he told News 12.
Kevin was born in Yonkers, but moved to the Dominican Republic at a young age after his mother's visa expired. He grew up there, but came back to the U.S. as an immigrant.
"Immigrants are really, really good people. They work really hard so everybody here have to appreciate what they do for this country," he said.
Kevin also had his drawing of the school's mascot selected to be printed on the Grimes Elementary School T-shirt.
He says he is looking forward to contributing to society.
"I want to be somebody," he said.
