Summer camp puts on big talent show

NEW CITY -

Move over Broadway, a summer camp for kids with special needs put together a big show.

Kids at the Jawonio Summer Camp in New City have been practicing their singing and dancing skills all summer long ahead of today’s performance.

Campers danced and sang along to a variety of movies like “Trolls,” “Tangled” and “Tarzan” in front of their family and friends.
Joseph Debargas even dressed up like Maui from Disney's “Moana” for his performance. “I'm a little shy sometimes but I'm going to get used to it. Once I'm called up, I'll be ready and be singing my song.”

Staff members at Jawonio say a lot of these campers have never sang before. “Many of our kids get the first chance to be in front of an audience to perform. And it's the first time their parents see them sing or dance in public,” says division director Jerry Staller.

The camp wraps up at the end of the week but a lot of the kids tell News 12 that they can't wait to come back next year.
