Water main break wreaks havoc for Dobbs Ferry businesses, drivers

DOBBS FERRY -

A major water main break in Dobbs Ferry washed away the day for some businesses and drivers Wednesday.

Officials say the break happened around 4 a.m. along Lawrence Street on the southbound side of the Saw Mill Parkway.

They say there was no loss of water to the businesses that neighbor the area and that there was a sewer near the break, which prevented flooding onto the parkway.

Construction still posed problems. The only way to get to the two shopping centers was a detour, causing traffic and headaches for drivers.

Some businesses like New York Sports Club stayed open despite the road closure, but others did not -- disappointing drivers who made the confusing and lengthy trip.

"We were looking forward to Chipotle, and now it’s closed, so now we have to find another location to go eat and try to go through all of this traffic here. Waste of time,” said Tina Jones.

Officials say the pipe likely broke due to age. It took crews about 11 hours to repair the break.
