Police probe Peekskill robbery as hate crimePosted: Updated:
Police are investigating whether a robbery over the weekend in Peekskill was a hate crime.
Akeem Joseph, Essa McGougain and Ishmail McGougain were arrested after the robbery on the 92 block of South Street.
The robbery left three victims injured, with one of the victims in serious condition.
All three victims were Hispanic, which is why police say they are looking into whether the attack was a hate crime.
Peekskill City Councilman Joe Torres says what worries him the most is that the judge did not put bail on the suspects.
“The judge that is there now, the one that let them go, has been releasing a lot of people who have been committing crimes,” says Torres. “That can relate to more crimes happening in the city.”
The suspects have been released on their own recognizance, and city leaders say they are worried about what kind of message that sends.
Torres says it not only makes the town less safe but also discourages police who work hard to bring the suspects into custody.
Police are investigating if the suspects are connected to another robbery that happened on Friday.
