MOUNT VERNON -

A Mount Vernon man has been convicted of robbing an undercover NYPD officer but was acquitted of murder.

Alvin Smothers robbed an undercover NYPD officer during a botched 2015 gun purchase in Mount Vernon.

When he ran away, the officer shot his gun, killing a 61-year-old bystander.

The officer was not charged and Smothers has now been cleared in that bystander's death.

He will be sentenced for the robbery in September.
