Man accused of killing 2-year-old appears in courtPosted: Updated:
A Mount Vernon man accused of beating his girlfriend's twin daughters, one of them fatally, appeared in court Thursday.
Derran Morris, 23, was back in court for procedural matters. He's accused of savagely beating his girlfriend Monique Turner's twin daughters, Addison and Annalynn, inside his father's basement apartment July 5 on South Third Avenue in Mount Vernon.
Addison died of her injuries, while Annalynn remains in the hospital.
Turner insists that Morris did not beat her daughters. But Turner's father says he's sure Morris is the culprit, as he claims to have seen signs of prior abuse before Addison died.
Morris' family, including his mother, declined to comment Thursday outside of court. The Turner family is still in mourning, and some of them say they blame the system for their loss, questioning the whereabouts of the social worker.
The twins' father is believed to be in Connecticut.
Morris has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder and first-degree assault and is due back in court in late August. His attorney says he is not seeking bail at this time.
