Mount Vernon mayor claims victory after court rulingPosted: Updated:
Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas is claiming victory over the City Council and comptroller after the state Supreme Court ruled in his favor and allowed him to continue using executive authority to appoint public officers of the law.
This includes commissioners, corporation counsel and his special assistant.
"I'm grateful that the court made the decision affirming my right to pick a team that's going to work for the people,” he said.
The City Council says the mayor is violating the city's charter by appointing staff members who do not call Mount Vernon home. The mayor calls it an attempt to stop progress and says he is appointing people who are capable, qualified and competent.
Council members says the charter is clear in saying that they must live in the city of Mount Vernon. Members say they are filing an appeal.
