Parents pack Pearl River school board meeting after coach’s dismissal

PEARL RIVER -

Parents packed a Pearl River school board meeting Wednesday evening to find out why a high school coach was unexpectedly let go just weeks after a major win for his baseball team.

The community went to bat for Mike Oliva, the now former varsity head coach of the high school baseball and football teams.

His wife, Kristin Oliva, tells News 12 that he was called before Human Resources last month and told his contract wouldn't be renewed, in spite of the baseball team winning the section championship just a few weeks ago over county rival Nyack.

There was some speculation the dismissal came about because of a rift between Oliva and athletic director Todd SantaBarbara.

News 12 reached out to the athletic director but has not heard back.
