Crash that hit family renews calls for more safety on Route 59Posted: Updated:
There are renewed calls for safety on Route 59 after police say a Spring Valley man hit a mother and her three kids with his car Monday afternoon in Monsey.
Police say 69-year-old Albert Gomez, of Spring Valley, plowed into a mother who was walking with her daughters, ages 8 and 13, near the Town Square Mall on Route 59 in Monsey. The mother was also pushing her 3-month-old son in a stroller. Police say Gomez was trying to pass a car on the shoulder when he struck the family.
Yossi Gestetner, with the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council, says the state roadway has been a known problem spot for years, but nothing has been done. Ramapo police had previously released a dashcam video as a warning, showing another mother and her baby almost being hit.
Town officials say the state did a safety study last year and that they are working together to implement improvements.
The names of the family have not been released. All are being treated at Westchester Medical Center, where the infant boy underwent emergency surgery. Gomez was charged with assault and reckless driving and is being held on $150,000 bail.
