Members from a church and synagogue will soon be worshiping in the same building in Rye.

Rye Presbyterian Church has been around for four centuries but for the first time in its history a congregation of a different religion will worship under its roof.

Starting this week, the Rabbi from the Community Synagogue of Rye will be holding services Friday nights and Saturday mornings in the church.

The synagogue will be undergoing major renovations, which forced members to find somewhere else to worship.

The renovations are expected to take 14 months.

Co-pastor John Miller says it was an easy decision to invite his Jewish neighbors to worship in their chapel.

“We are different religions but we both acknowledge that we worship the same God,” he says.

Miller says the two organizations have a long history that includes members of both congregations taking a trip to Israel together.

"In the world in which we are living in today, we hope that this relationship between two communities, between two congregations goes beyond something symbolic, but something real," he says.
