MOUNT VERNON -

A meeting was held Tuesday in Mount Vernon to answer questions about the newly created Excelsior Scholarship that qualifies students for free college tuition.

The meeting was held at the Doles Community Center.

To qualify for the Excelsior Scholarship, one must be a resident of New York, plan to attend a SUNY or CUNY two- or four-year college, come from a family with an income of less than $100,000 and already be applied for FAFSA.

Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul attended the meeting and laid out how the scholarship will benefit the state in the long-run.

"Employers today want to go to the state where they can have the most competitive opportunities available to them, and that means an educated workforce," she says.

The deadline to apply for the scholarship to attend college for free this fall is July 21.
