Norwegian Air joins carriers at Stewart International AirportPosted: Updated:
Norwegian Air has joined the host of carriers that operate out of Stewart International Airport in Newburgh.
The maiden flight between Orange County and Scotland took off Thursday.
Kathleen Kraus said the deal on Norwegian Air was so amazing that she and her daughter flew from North Carolina so she could visit family in Edinburgh, Scotland.
"I started looking around, and I found this amazing deal for $435 out of Newburgh, New York," she says.
Stewart International Airport spent more than $200 million to upgrade its facilities and serve international travelers, giving them another option instead of airports like JFK and LaGuardia.
Norwegian will offer 19 new flights weekly to cities in Scotland, Ireland and Norway. Plans are also already in the works to add more international cities.
County leaders say it will provide a big economic boost to the area, including the creation of hundreds of jobs.
U.S. Global Airways is expected to soon make Stewart its European hub, offering direct flights to Tel Aviv, Budapest and Prague.
To sweeten the deal for potential passengers, Stewart is also offering $20 bus rides between the airport and Port Authority in New York City.
