Yonkers woman sentenced for shooting husband in head

WHITE PLAINS -

A Yonkers woman is heading to prison for shooting her husband in the head while he slept.

Emily Dearden was sentenced Thursday to 3 1/2 years in prison for shooting her husband Kenneth Dearden in 2013.

The sentence was part of a plea deal that the 48-year-old Yonkers mother and NYPD psychologist worked out with prosecutors after she pleaded guilty to attempted assault earlier this year.

Prosecutors say Dearden shot her husband in their bedroom and claimed someone had broken into their Pondfield Road West home.

Dearden chose not to say anything in court or express any remorse before her sentencing.

Kenneth Dearden made an emotional statement in court expressing frustration about how his wife's actions had deeply damaged their children. Outside the court, he insisted that while he's moved on, his children haven't.

"I feel justice was served, but my kids still suffer...she has lost more than 3 1/2 years,” he said. “I'm happy with the outcome."

Dearden was taken out of the court in handcuffs and taken to prison to begin serving her time.
