Seniors, Girl Scouts raise funds for handicap ramp

Seniors who live at the Sarah Neuman Center teamed up with the Girl Scouts to raise funds for the construction of a handicap ramp so a Scout in a wheelchair can join her troop at their meeting house.
Olivia Vander Woude was asked to join Girl Scout Troop 2997 in Larchmont last year.
“Olivia doesn't have that many chances to interact with girls of her own age who are typical, so for her to be included in the troop was just such an incredible gift,” says her mom, Polly Vander Woude.
Olivia, who is also non-verbal, and her troop soon realized they had a problem. The Girl Scout meeting house where they hold their activities is not ADA-compliant, lacking a ramp for Olivia’s wheelchair.
The girls teamed up with the Sarah Neuman residents to host a Walk and Roll event to help raise money for the $15,000 ramp.

By the end of the event, the girls were just shy of their total fundraising goal.
