Hospital honors vets with extra care

Caring for those who once fought for our freedom is one local hospital’s way of giving back to veterans this Memorial Day.
New York-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville is offering free health screenings for veterans and their families, which will include checking blood pressure and sleep patterns during the week leading up to Memorial Day.  "It's the least I can do to give back to these veterans who have sacrificed their lives for us," says Chief of Surgery Dr. Miguel Silva
Carmine DePasquale, a decorated veteran who served in the US Navy in the mid-60s, will finally be getting the care he deserves. "When we go down to the veterans hospital, they are so backed up that a lot of people have to pay," says DePasquale.
For some of the veterans, it's more than just the free health screenings. It's about getting that care so close to home.  "For us to come to local hospital like this that is so close to our homes. It benefits the veterans, senior veterans who can't travel far," says veteran William Aguilar.
The free health screenings will be held next Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and next Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.. The hospital hopes to make this an annual event.
