Columbus lesson touches a nerve at Mount Vernon school
A lesson on Christopher Columbus at a Mount Vernon school is spurring mixed reactions in the community.
A source in the Mount Vernon School district gave News 12 note cards written by second-grade students from Columbus Elementary School.  The note cards said things like Columbus "was not a nice guy," "he killed 90 percent of Native Americans" and that "he did not discover America."
The source says second-grade teacher Sanaa Basheer put those notes on the bulletin board last Friday.
Some parents called it racist and misleading, but others find nothing wrong with it.
"I do believe in the work that she does about the content, and I'm not concerned about the content at all. And I've been in the class. I've been here for parents day. She never forces anything down the children's throat," says Latanya Hayward, whose son is in Mrs. Basheer's class.
The school had no comment on the incident.
