Deep freeze to follow storm's rain and snow

NORWALK -

Plunging temperatures are in the forecast for western Connecticut today in the wake of the storm that brought snow, rain and sleet to the area.

News 12 meteorologists say any lingering rain and wintry mix will taper in the early afternoon. Winds will be gusty E/NW 15-20 mph, gusting to 30 mph.

Temperatures will peak early in the lower-40s in southern areas and upper-30s to the north, but will quickly drop in the afternoon. Flash freezing is possible, and anything slushy or wet will ice over as temps fall below freezing by the early evening.

For tonight, skies will gradually clear but it remains dangerously cold with brutal wind chills. Lows will fall into the single digits, but will feel like -5 to -20. Roads overnight may be icy.

For Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, it will be mostly sunny and very cold. The temperature will be 16 degrees. The wind will be NW 15-20, making it feel even colder.
