Storm brings, sleet, icy conditions, and plunging temperatures

NORWALK -

A storm is bringing snow, sleet, ice and heavy rains to western Connecticut before freezing over, creating dangerously slippery conditions.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for northern Litchfield until 4 p.m. Flash flood watches and coastal flood advisories were also issued until 1 p.m.

For Sunday, warmer air will change any snow along the Sound to a mix of sleet and freezing rain. Most of Litchfield County, and Northern Fairfield remain as snow. The precipitation tapers off by the afternoon, but then temperatures start to plummet, and that could bring flash freezing and dangerous ice on roadways.

By Sunday night, temperatures plummet to the single-digits and any leftover slush or standing water will freeze quickly. Wind chills will make it feel even colder.

Heavy rain will follow for southern areas, but an icy mix will continue further up north. Drivers should use extreme caution if travel is necessary. It will also be windy, with winds NE-SE at 15-35 mph and higher gusts. This could lead to power outages.

And for Martin Luther King Day on Monday, it will be partly sunny and breezy but brutally cold. High temperatures will be just 15 degrees. Icy conditions on roadways could persist into the Monday morning commute.
