Storm brings, snow, icy conditions, and plunging temperatures

The winter storm that started out with a burst of snow is bringing soaking rains to much of New Jersey that could lead to flooding, and plunging temperatures later today could bring dangerous, icy conditions.

A winter storm warning was issued for northwestern counties, and flood watches, flash flood watches and coastal flood advisories were also posted for parts of the state lasting until various parts throughout the day.

Expect heavy rain this morning. Ice is possible in the northwestern most areas as colder air comes back in. Temperatures before noontime will peak in the upper-30s in the north through the upper-40s south, but will then plunge into the 20s during the afternoon. Any lingering showers in the afternoon could change back to some snow or a wintry mix as they move out of the area.

Winds will be gusty, at SW/NW 10-20 mph  and gusting to 35-40 mph, which could lead to power outages. Tidal flooding is a concern, as well as some regular flooding from the heavy rain.

Overnight, skies will gradually clear as brutally cold air settles in. The rapid drop in temperatures could lead to a "flash freeze," leading to glazing on roadways and surfaces. Drivers are urged to use caution Sunday afternoon into Monday morning.

Temperatures tonight will range from 1-10 degrees, but feel like 7 to 14 degrees below zero due to the winds.

For Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, it will be partly sunny and breezy but still frigid. The high will be 16 degrees.
