Synthetic marijuana ban goes into effect in Westchester
A new law in Westchester County that puts stiff penalties for the sale and possession of synthetic marijuana went into effect Tuesday.
The law bans the drug under the consumer protection code. Dealers and users will now face fines of up to $2,000 and up to a year of prison. It doesn't technically criminalize possession under the state penal law.
"We hopefully will get stronger legislation in the future but it is a start," says White Plains Police Commissioner David Chong.
A K2 dealer that goes by the street name "Savage" told News 12 that he doesn't see anything wrong with the drug.
"I get high. I sell it. I make money and I do it all over," Savage told News 12. "Some people do crazy things on this drug."
When asked if the selling of K2 weighs on his conscience, Savage responded, "No. Because there is choice. I don't force them to pick up the blunt. I'm just here selling it to you."
The dealer says the local law will not stop him from selling the drug.
