Fire claims New Rochelle home during winter storm

New Rochelle firefighters had their hands full with a house fire during the blizzard.

New Rochelle Fire Department Chief Lou Dimeglio says that firefighters were hampered by the snow because it made pulling the hoses much more difficult. Road conditions forced crews to take extra time when responding to the blaze on Thornbury Road.

The fire started in the garage and spread when the homeowner smelled smoke and opened the garage, pushing the flames to engulf the rest of the home.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated but a snowblower may have been the cause, as the homeowner was using one to move snow and had just put gasoline into it.
