Condo owners salvage belongings after Yonkers fire

Condo owners at 1 Hawley Terrace returned to their homes with a firefighter escort Thursday to salvage whatever they could carry after an early morning fire devastated the building on Wednesday.

Nearly a dozen people who lived in the six-story building spent the night at the Police Athletic League's makeshift shelter. Other residents stayed at local hotels.

None of them seem to have a firm idea of what comes next, or when or if they will ever be allowed to move back into their homes again.

Despite losing everything, residents say they are taking time to count their blessings. Tykeisha Johnson's neighbor, Adolph Polocana, woke her up and helped her escape the blaze.

"I'm most grateful, thankful to him and the fire department," she says.
