Yonkers police tell residents to lock car doors

Yonkers residents are being warned to lock their cars at night, following a rash of burglaries that targeted unlocked vehicles in Colonial Heights.

Some residents there say they've been targeted for years, but lately the number of break-ins has been on the rise. Stolen items range from loose change to electronic devices like iPads and laptops.

One neighbor provided surveillance images to police, who are seeking a man shown earlier this month.

In March, the local neighborhood association says a thief or thieves broke into 17 cars in a single night. In one incident, an intruder was seen sitting in a car, but he escaped on foot.

Police say residents should not leave valuables in their car, park in well-lit areas, install wheel locks, close all windows and lock their doors.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
