Witnesses tackle robbery suspect in Monsey
A man robbed a 78-year-old woman in front of her home in Monsey Friday afternoon and both the suspect and his apparent confession were caught on camera, police say.
Authorities say passersby jumped into action when they saw what happened and pinned him to the ground. Suspect Hayler Ruiz-Alejo, 30, was apprehended by members of the Chaverim of Rockland, a community watch organization.
A video of the incident appears to show the suspect say, "Just to have her money, whatever she have," in an apparent explanation for the crime.
Ramapo police then placed him into custody. They say they recovered a box cutter at the scene.
News 12 spoke to the victim's husband, who says she was not cut, but was grabbed around the neck and face. Left with multiple bruises, she is recovering at home.
Before the attack, police say the suspect was driving around the neighborhood in a red Toyota that has since been impounded.
Ruiz-Alejo faces charges of DWI, attempted robbery, assault and criminal trespass.
