Mother of slain teen: 'For me, he was everything'

The mother of the 19-year-old who was brutally stabbed to death at the Ridge Hill movie theater tells News 12 that she is absolutely heartbroken.

Sheila Hamilton says she was working Saturday when she got a phone call informing her that her son, Daij Thomas, had been stabbed.

"He went to work yesterday and he never came home," she said.

As News 12 reported, Thomas who worked at the theater, was stabbed around 12:45 a.m. following a fight with another man in the lobby. Police believe the two men knew each other prior to the incident.

According to his mother, Daij was stabbed at age 15 in Getty Square, then again just two weeks ago in Culver Park.

Hamilton says her son had just started working at the movie theater this week, and was trying to provide for his son Asanti, who turns 2 later this month.

She says Thomas was quiet but extremely hard-working and helpful. "For me, he was everything," she says.

This is not the first time Hamilton has felt heartbreaking loss. She says her other son Miguel Thomas was also 19 years old when he was shot eight times in the Bronx on April 18, 2003.

"It's going to take a toll, trust me right now it's taking a toll on me. I have no more tears to cry," she told News 12.

Funeral arrangements are pending as a memorial continues to grow on Ludlow Street in Yonkers.

Officers recovered a knife at the scene and are now reviewing surveillance footage of the stabbing. They are asking anyone with information about the incident to call Yonkers police.
