Residents decry officials at Ramapo meeting
Residents spilled out into the hallway at a packed Ramapo Town Board meeting Wednesday night, many hoping to publicly call on the town's embattled supervisor to step down.
Residents say Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence silenced them at last month's meeting when they wanted to weigh in on his recent federal indictments for allegedly lying to investors and illegally using taxpayer money to build the defunct Provident Bank Park in Pomona.
When officials asked residents to raise their hands if they wanted to speak, the room erupted in shouting. Many booed the supervisor.
In another contentious move, the board announced it would not fire another controversial official — Adam Peltz, a fire inspector who allegedly ignored hazardous violations at private schools.
Officials say Peltz has agreed to a pay cut, a demotion to assistant fire inspector and other sanctions. He is also facing a 60-day suspension and will be required to undergo retraining.
Before the meeting, protesters rallied outside, demanding St. Lawrence's resignation.
St. Lawrence declined to comment.
