While Saturday marked opening day for a Yonkers youth baseball program, several coaches are blaming the city for the poor conditions of their designated field.
"The drains are clogged, the city refuses to bring in dirt," said Coach Bill DiFonzo, of Dunwoodie Youth Association. "We can't get the kids on the field."
News 12 has been told that Cook Field was not ready for opening day due to a drainage problem that the city has failed to fix.
"Nothing is getting done," said DiFonzo. "There are 23,000 kids under 18 in Yonkers, and we can't create a place for our kids to play."
Deputy Mayor Steve Levy told News 12 the reason Cook Field wasn't ready was because of the recent rainfall.
Meanwhile, city officials said fixing the drainage problem could cost somewhere around $10 million.
