Car accident call turns into second '07 Mt. Vernon homicide
Police are investigating a homicide that started as a car accident call in Mount Vernon as the victim's brother spoke Sunday to News 12.
Omar Payne, of the Bronx, says his brother, 37-year-old Garfield Payne, was found shot in the chest Saturday night at W. Seventh Street near S. Sixth Avenue. Authorities say when they arrived at the scene, they found the victim on the street and a black SUV crashed into a utility pole. Payne later died at the hospital.
The victim's brother says Garfield Payne was visiting from Virginia. He leaves behind three children. Relatives hope a witness will help bring the killer to justice.
While authorities are not saying much about the case, their investigation led them to a Laundromat. Officers at the scene eventually crossed over into the Bronx along Dyer Avenue. The homicide is Mount Vernon's second of the year. Anyone with information is urged to call police at 914-665-2588.
