Two of Mt. Vernon's finest plead guilty in illegal drag race
Two Mount Vernon police officers pleaded guilty Wednesday nearly a year after an illegal drag race ended in a crash.
Officer Robert Burke and Leonard Cooper were charged with reckless driving after drag racing down Macquesten Parkway in April 2006. A female passenger, New York State Trooper Meredith Govani, was injured in the crash. The officers were on desk duty since January but are now on full duty. However, they still may face disciplinary action from the department.
Five other Mount Vernon police officers and two civilian employees still face disciplinary action for their role in the investigation. The plea deal for Burke and Cooper includes community service and speaking to students about the dangers of driving recklessly.
