Mt. Vernon man shot, 2nd murder this week

Police say a Mt. Vernon man in his early 20s was shot in broad daylight Thursday, making it the second fatal crime in the city in a week.

Police responded to numerous 911 calls for shots fired. When they arrived at the scene they found one man shot dead, and another injured.

Police say they recovered a gun from the scene but have yet to make any arrests or determine a motive. They are trying to determine whether this incident is connected to a fatal shooting in Mt. Vernon Tuesday night, when a 20-year-old man was killed blocks from his home.

Community members turned out Thursday night to join police in a demand to end the violence.

The wounded victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, and is expected to survive.
