Mt. Vernon school melee leaves 2 hurt, teen arrested

A student and his father are in the hospital Monday night and a teen was arrested after a melee at a Mount Vernon middle school.

The brawl occurred at the Longfellow Middle School Monday afternoon. Police say the 12-year-old student was sent home from school for fighting earlier in the day. According to authorities, the boy was brought back to school by his father.

Police say somehow the man, his son and a group of students became involved in a fight in front of the school using rocks and bricks as weapons. When police arrived at the scene, they say a 14-year-old boy was smashing out the windows of the man?s SUV with a rock.

The 14-year-old boy was arrested and charged with gang assault and criminal mischief. The father and his son were taken to the hospital with head injuries.

Police are still investigating the incident, which could be gang-related. More charges could be filed against several students and the father.
