Day laborers prepare for new Mamaroneck hiring site
Beginning Tuesday, day laborers will once again have an official hiring site in the Village of Mamaroneck.
Bishop Wayne Powell and Strait Gate Church on Madison Street have decided to allow the Hispanic Resource Center to base a hiring site on the property. The day laborers will have the parking lot and two rooms, which allow for up to 80 individuals to wait inside during bad weather, at their disposal. Educational programs for the workers and their families are also being organized at what is being called the Hispanic Resource Center's Worker Center.
The former hiring site was shut down by the Village of Mamaroneck, which cited traffic and safety concerns, in February 2006. A federal judge ruled in favor of six day laborers who filed a lawsuit that claimed discrimination, but the site never reopened.
