Stores on North Avenue were struggling after a power cable was knocked out. Many decided to close their doors instead of waiting for Con Edison to come. As the manhole smoked outside, the owner of Petland Discounts was smoking mad. He says he already lost lots of fish in a few hours without power. Business owners and residents say it is the third power outage in the neighborhood in two weeks. Some say they are nervous there will be a repeat of last year?s power outage, when homes and businesses were left in the dark for more than a week.
Con Ed crews are on the scene repairing the cable. Con Ed officials say they hope to have power restored by the evening.
