A Monroe man is dead after his plane crashed in an open field in Highland Lake Park Sunday.
Wallkill police say they received a 911 call about a plane crash just before 7 p.m. Authorities say James Whiteford died on impact.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that Whiteford was flying a single engine experimental plane. Investigators are not sure whether he was taking off or returning home when the plane crashed.
Wallkill police as well as state and park law enforcement are investigating the cause of the crash.
