Man apparently jumps to his death from mall garage

A man apparently jumped to his death from a parking garage at the Westchester Mall in White Plains Thursday.

According to police, the victim drove to the top of the parking garage and jumped off the 10-story structure around 2:30 p.m. Police are interviewing witnesses who saw the incident unfold as they were shopping.

Police say the victim, identified as 40-year-old Brian Kaplan, of Port Chester, was pronounced dead at the scene. They say it appears to be a suicide.

The mall remained open, but surrounding streets were closed as police investigated. Police say it was fortunate that no one on the ground got hurt as the streets were busy with mall shoppers.
