Cortlandt meeting looks for Indian Point answers
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission held a meeting in Cortlandt Monday evening to discuss issues pertaining to Indian Point?s new emergency alarm system.
The NRC is trying to determine if Indian Point owner and operator Entergy will be able to meet an August 24 deadline for the installation of a new emergency alert system. Indian Point has already missed two NRC deadlines and has been working in violation of order.
Westchester County Commissioner of Emergency Services Anthony Sutton says his major concern involves the plant?s ability to alert the public in the event of a crisis as well as the public?s ability to understand emergency procedures if they occur.
?We've asked them for information in areas like how they're going to provide training and testing,? said NRC spokesperson Diane Screnci.
Another concern of Sutton?s involves the frequency of siren testing, saying the soundings are desensitizing the public.
Entergy says the company will continue testing and is awaiting results from an independent review. It hopes the information, which it says should be in by the end of the week, will help Entergy work out the glitches in the system.
