Police investigate drowning in Croton River
Police are investigating what caused a man to drown in the Croton River Tuesday night.
At about 6:30 p.m., Croton police got a 911 call about a possible drowning at Mayo's Landing. Police found 29-year-old Gary Roberts, of Croton, floating in the river and pulled him out. He later died at the hospital. According to police, Roberts apparently tried to cross the river.
Officials say Roberts is the first person to drown at Mayo's Landing since two Brooklyn teens died in 2000. A police boat that usually patrols the river was not available Tuesday night.
According to police, there is no evidence of foul play or intoxication. However, they still don't know what kind of trouble Roberts had that caused him to drown.
