Elderly man killed in car crash on busy Yonkers street

Police are investigating the death of an elderly Mt. Vernon man who was killed when his car collided with an SUV on Central Park Avenue in Yonkers Wednesday.

Police say they aren?t exactly sure about the events leading up to the crash. However, they believe a Honda driven by the 84-year-old victim was traveling south and was either making a left onto Melrose Avenue or was attempting to make a U-turn. Police say at that point an SUV going north plowed into the side of the victim?s car. A witness says the Honda then skidded into a light pole.

Emergency crews arrived moments later, but the driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Police closed the northbound lanes of Central Park Avenue for hours during the investigation.
