Mt. Vernon rat problem turns into dead rat problem

A family in Mount Vernon may soon be out on the streets because dozens of dead rats are inside the walls of their apartment building.
Bryan family members were forced to find another place to live after they say rats infested the building. However, those arrangements fell through. After the city discovered the building was overrun by rats coming from a vacant lot next door, officials took aggressive action and had the lot cleaned up.
The rodent problem was resolved, but a dead rodent problem took its place. The Bryans say that poisoned rats found their way into their apartment and died in the walls. They say it is beginning to seriously affect their health.
The city is planning to condemn the home, saying it is no longer safe. City officials say the mayor will re-examine the problem on Monday. He hopes the building owner may be able to fix the problems that led to the condemnation to begin with.
The Mount Vernon United Tenants say they will help the Bryan family find another place to live.
