Vandals deface Yonkers Gold Star Mothers Monument

For the second time in over a month, vandals defaced the Gold Star Mothers Monument in Yonkers Wednesday.
Two gold stars were stolen from the monument that honors the mothers of fallen soldiers, says Eli Vetrano, the former chairman of the Yonkers Central Committee of Veterans Organizations. The monument depicts a woman sitting between two stone slabs and holding a folded flag, and is located across from the Yonkers train station.
Vetrano says a gold star mothers' day service is scheduled to mark the monument's one-year anniversary during the last weekend in September. He says they just finished cleaning up the monument from the last vandals and he isn't sure it will be ready for the service on September 29.
"[The stars] don't come off by themselves," Vetrano says. "Somebody had to be taking them off."
