Machine re-count gives Young 401-vote lead
A voting machine re-count Monday in the Mount Vernon mayoral primary gave challenger Clinton Young a 401-vote lead over incumbent Mayor Ernie Davis.
The Westchester Board of Elections double-checked all 77 voting machines, which are being guarded. Davis is seeking his fourth term as mayor and fellow Democrat and county legislator Clinton Young is looking for an upset.
Last Friday, the Young campaign obtained a court order to protect the more than 600 paper ballots that were cast in the election. However, Westchester's Democratic election commissioner said about 150 of those are qualified to be included. Officials will count the paper ballots Wednesday.
A spokesman for Young said the challenger predicted many of the paper ballots would be thrown out. Onlookers believe even when those votes are counted, Davis won't be able to win.
A spokeswoman for Davis has said the mayor will wait for the results before deciding his next move.
If either candidate challenges the legitimacy of the paper ballots, a winner might not be known until well after Wednesday.
