Lawyer wants accused cop killer's statements tossed
An actor from Yonkers who is accused of killing an NYPD officer appeared in a Bronx courtroom Monday for a pretrial hearing.
Alleged shooter Steven Armento and former "Sopranos" and "A Bronx Tale" actor Lillo Brancato Jr. face charges in the December 2005 shooting of off-duty Officer Daniel Enchantegui. The suspects were allegedly trying to rob a Bronx home when the cop tried to stop them, resulting in a shootout.
Brancato's attorney said in court that his client's incriminating hospital statements should not be admitted during the trial. The attorney maintains Brancato was medicated for his injuries and had a tube down his throat.
Armento's attorney is also trying to get his client's statements thrown out before the trial.
Police officers and Brancato's relatives appeared in court to lend their support for. Enchantegui's family did not attend the hearing. An October 14 hearing will determine which statements will be allowed. In turn, that will determine whether the suspects will be tried separately. A murder trial for one or both of the men is expected to begin by the end of October.
