Family, friends give final salute to Pelham officer

Family and friends gathered Monday for a final goodbye to a Pelham police officer killed last week in a car accident.
Police Officer Shamus Sliney was killed when his car slid off the southbound side of Route 9 in Cortlandt and skidded down a ravine. Sliney was off duty at the time of the accident. State investigators have pinpointed excessive speed as the cause of the crash.
Sliney's wife Debbie clung to the couple's 3-year-old daughter during the service at Saint Catherine's Church. She was joined by family, friends and fellow officers.
The decorated officer began his career with the Mount Vernon Police Department and then joined the Pelham Police Department. During his 11 years of service, he became well-known and liked.
