Ecuadorian community mourns Spring Valley men

Spring Valley's Ecuadorian community is mourning two friends who died in a car accident that their roommate faces charges for.

Police say Jose Chicaiza and Jose Fernandez, both 25, were killed Saturday morning when their car slammed into a utility pole on Route 202 in Garnerville. The driver, 22-year-old Galo Zaruma, was the victims' roommate. He suffered minor injuries and is charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Family members say they are trying to raise enough money to send Chicaiza and Fernandez's bodies back to their native Ecuador. Fernandez has a wife and two children there, according to relatives. Friend Ricardo Cevollos says he is in shock over the tragedy.

Zaruma is being held on $250,000 bail at the Rockland County Jail.
