Councilman criticized for affordable housing remark
While police search for gunmen in a fatal Yonkers shootout, residents expressed outrage Wednesday over a City Council member's comments.
Councilman John Murtagh (R-Yonkers) was criticized for saying, "Nobody, quite frankly, is happy to have this development here. It proves it doesn't necessarily belong in a middle-class neighborhood."
A Raleigh Valentine Townhouses resident, who wished not to be identified, said the people who cause problems at the affordable housing complex don't live there and he said it was an isolated incident.
"I do find it offensive and I think he should apologize," countered Yonkers NAACP member Sean Spillman, 17. "Affordable housing is nationwide. You're saying minorities when you're talking about affordable housing."
Gregory Fuller, 22, was released from a hospital Wednesday after the Helena Avenue shooting that left him with a gunshot wound to his back. Tyrone Bergmann, 22, was shot in the chest and died.
Police are searching for two suspects and ask anyone with information about the crime to contact them at 914-377-7724.
Murtagh is holding a public safety meeting Thursday, Jan. 17 at the Asbury Church auditorium at 7 p.m.
